Teaching
When I graduated from the British School of Osteopathy I’d won the prize in the subject of Osteopathic Principles. Possibly for this reason I was asked if I’d like to come back to teach the subject along with helping on the Craniosacral part of the course. At the same time, I was invited to teach students studying with the Guild of Homeopaths. I discovered that I loved teaching, loved helping others to learn, and loved how much I learned by teaching.
In 2001, I asked Jim Jealous about teaching, and he said, ’Teach What you Know’. It sounds obvious but it was a sage piece of advice, students can always feel if you are grounded in your subject.
Most years since 2011 I have either lectured or been a table tutor at the annual Bio-Basic weekend introducing students to the concepts of Biodynamic Craniosacral Osteopathy and around the same time I began teaching with Ian Wright on his Irish Paediatric Course. We also teach a ‘Mother and Baby Course’ together for the Craniosacral Therapy Education Trust [See CTET], and for the Cranio sacral Therapy Association.
More recently I have taught online for ‘Still Learning’ run by Sarah Nesling, for ‘Our Birth Journey’ run by John Wilk and for the Children’s Osteopathic Centre in Brazil with Fabiano Da Silva. In person I have taught at the European School of Osteopathy, The British College of Osteopathic Medicine, Osteopathic Children’s clinic of Barcelona and the Sutherland Cranial Academy in Belgium.
Testimonial
"I always look forward to Mary’s teaching, not purely for the wealth and depth of knowledge and clinical experience so beautifully embedded in the work of Sutherland and Jim Jealous
but especially the particular Mary magic that comes with her. Her teaching style is light at every level, deep knowledge presented with lightness and clarity, lightness through humour, light touch and connection to the light within us all. Somehow Mary manages to draw out
from students the knowing that they have access to the subtler nuances and realms that are natural for Mary in her work, but may feel esoteric, out of our experience or we haven’t trusted that this is what we have been feeling. Students come away inspired and confident,
expanded personally and ready to engage clients from a wider perspective.
Mary has done a number of day webinars for me as part of the Still Learning programme, these include Death and Dying, Working with the Ancestry, Emotional Baggage Reclaim and Puberty and Teens. Each one has been well attended with fantastic ongoing feedback from students. Especially popular are the days outdoors where the participants allow themselves
to feel the support of mature oaks and the natural surroundings working with the tide. On these days students have unfolded into new understandings and palpatory approaches to embryological wholeness and learned practical clinical skills for working with the psycho/neuro/immune system and allowing fire in the bones!"
